Louis Wiest, Jr., MS, VMD
Owner and Veterinarian
Dr. Wiest, Jr., grew up in Maryland and attended the University of Maryland where he earned a BS and MS degree while working for the US Department of Agriculture at the National Parasitological Institute in Beltsville, Maryland. He attained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine NE. After veterinary school, he entered the United States Air Force where he was assigned to Langley AFB as Base Veterinarian. He practiced companion animal medicine in Virginia, New Jersey, and Maryland before starting the Patuxent Valley Animal Hospital in Howard County. He is a member of several professional organizations e.g. Maryland VMA, Howard County VMA, American Heartworm Society, Greater Baltimore VMA, Helminthological Society of Washington, American Association of Avian Veterinarians, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. He has published several scientific publications. He started the Patuxent Valley Animal Hospital in Columbia in 1980 and subsequently began Just For Pets pet store just for birds, run by his daughter Kristi. He was on the Animal Matters Hearing Board of Howard County, is Chairman of Advisory Boards of PETS on Wheels of Howard County, participates in the Eden Alternative Program for Seniors at Vantage House Senior Center in Columbia, attends Mt Zion Methodist Church in Highland, is a member of the National Capital Dahlia Society and Potomac Valley Camellia Society. Besides growing dahlias and camellias, Dr. Wiest avidly plays golf and bowls in the Friday Night Late Starters bowling league. At home, he has two daughters, a son (chef), grandson, two dogs, one cat and a bird.
