Alamo Animal Hospital was founded in 1972 by Dr. John C. Andersen with a dual purpose: to provide the best possible care to pets and piece of mind to their owners. We have always strived to build and maintain a reputation for excellence and satisfaction amongst our customers, and are extremely proud of the results. For 28 years now, we have been helping to keep the pets of the Alamo community healthy and happy.

We maintain a modern, well-equipped surgical suite and extensive in-house laboratory. Preventive medicine is practiced and recommended to our clients and their pets. Dr. Andersen is board-certified in Oncology and welcomes all referrals from other veterinarians all over the Bay area. Dr. Atwater's specialty is also Oncology.

We believe that it is through communicating with you, the pet owner, that we can both work together to give your pet a happy and healthy home environment. Pets are an important part of all our lives, and we want nothing more than to ensure that your friends remain with you for a long, long time.

John C. Andersen, DVM

Owner and Veterinarian

Dr. Andersen is a partner and original owner of the Alamo Animal Hospital since 1972. Dr. Andersen is a U.C Davis graduate of 1970 and practices general medicine.
He has worked in organized veterinary medicine at the state and local levels extensively, and has worked with the Alamo Improvement Association over the years. In Dr. Andersen's "spare time", along with his pet therapy visitations to shut-ins with his Jack Russell Terrier pal Peggy Sue, his hobbies include guitar, bicycling, running, and reading. Married for 35 years to Jan, Dr. Andersen has 2 grown children, Jody and Jason.
Current pets besides Peggy include 2 goats and a cat.

Stephen W. Atwater, DVM, MS

Veterinarian

Dr. Atwater was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He is an identical twin. He went to boarding school in Watertown, Connecticut at the Taft School. He obtained his undergraduate degree at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania before moving to Colorado. He married his wife Leslie, in September 1996. Their first child was born, David Stoddard Atwater, on August 25, 2000. His interests include reading, bicycle riding, gardening and walking his black Labrador Retriever, Zoe, in the open spaces.
Dr. Atwater received his professional training at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He graduated from veterinary school in 1988, after which he did an internship in internal medicine. He was then accepted into a three-year residency program in oncology, during which he received a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Sciences. Dr. Atwater moved to Denver, where he practiced veterinary medicine for two years. He moved to California in July 1996. He has been practicing veterinary medicine at Alamo Animal Hospital since that time.
Dr. Atwater is a diplomat in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Oncology. He is also a member of Phi Zeta, the National Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine. He is currently president of the Contra Costa Veterinary Medical Association.

Diane Selmer

Office Manager

I started here back in 1984. So, that makes 16 years in this field. I enjoy my job here as the bookkeeper.
But, I do miss the days when I was in the Roller Derby. I was known as Dynamo Diane with the East Bay Bombers.
In my spare time I enjoy traveling. Taking crusies and seeing the world.
You can also see me at the local bowling alley. My average score is around 300.

Barbara St. Amant

Registered Veterinary Technician

Barb was born and raised in the Midwest, mostly in Wisconsin. She received a BA in preschool-kindergarten from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Then an associate degree to become an animal health technician. She first worked in Idaho mainly with dogs and cats, but also beefalo's and elk's. After moving to the Bay Area in 1985 she worked for a veterinary surgeon. She now has been with Alamo Animal Hospital for 14 years as a head technician. Barb has 2 elderly cats and enjoys hiking, camping, and exercising.

Sheryl Beitch

Registered Veterinary Technician

Sheryl graduated from the Medical Institute of Minnesota in 1976. Her continued interest in veterinary medicine has taken her into research and clinical work with many species of animals. President of the SCWTCNC, she enjoys showing and raising Wheaten Terriers, and her 4 children.
Sheryl has been employed as a veterinary technican for 24 years, 3 of them at Alamo Animal Hospital. Tap dancing is one of her favorite past times.

Rebecca Duquette

Registered Veterinary Technician

Rebecca received her training at Western Career College in San Leandro California. Alamo Animal Hospital was one of the clinical rotations during her schooling. She is now a RVT and has been at this hospital for 3 years.
She has a cat named Alley and a pit bull named Shelby.

Brett Coleman

Registered Veterinary Technician

I have been working as a veterinary technician for 7 years and have worked at Alamo Animal Hospital for 2 years. I have recently earned a bachelor's degree from U. C. Berkeley in molecular and cell biology and am now working on my master's degree. I am also a human nurse in the Army reserve, part of a local combat support hospital.
My personal pets are Sarah, a manx cat, Sam, a domestic short hair cat, and Sylvester, a burmese python.

Barbie Mullins

Receptionist

Barbie was born and raised in the Bay Area. Before getting involved into the veterinary profession she was a pre-school teacher. She started out working for a large and small animal practice before coming to Alamo Animal Hospital. Barbie has been working here for 5 years.
In her spare time she enjoys camping, swimming. Along with spending time with her little boy Tyler and their dog Rusty.

Leslie Scott

Receptionist

Leslie has been at Alamo Animal Hospital for 15 years as a receptionist. She enjoys spending her free time with her 2 Australian Shepherds and her horses. Leslie also enjoys spending time with her husband riding their Harley.

Yvette Supriano

Receptionist

I'm Yvette and I just started here at the hospital as a receptionist. I was born and raised here in the Bay area. I became involved with this profession over 5 years ago. In the last 11 years I have been showing and breeding champion Lhasa Apso's. In my spare time I enjoy reading, music and most of all being with my dogs at the dog shows. It is important to me that my dogs have fun in the ring. Their enjoyment is reflected in the expressions in their eyes and reactions. Win or lose they are always winners to me. Because dogs give us so much unconditional love, we can learn alot from them. They give us so much pleasure and laughter and yet ask so little.

Marcia Bower

Receptionist

Marcia started working for a veterinarian in Hawaii as a receptionist. With 20 years of experience, she has been with Alamo Animal Hospital for 16 years. She really enjoys the animals and their owners. Born and raised in the San Francisco area. Marcia has been married for 39 years to Rusty. Together they have 2 grown children and 1 grand child. Along with a cat or 2. When she's not working she likes to travel and just have fun times.

Sonja Ward

Receptionist

Sonja was born and raised in the Bay Area. And has lived in the same town of Clayton for 10 years. She has recently been engaged and is very happy. After graduating high school 3 years ago, she began working at Alamo Animal Hospital. She has recently received her associates degree in Psychology.
When she's not working or in school she enjoys jet skiing, snow skiing. And most of all spending time with her new yellow Labrador retriever named Travis. Along with her 2 cats Smokey and Cinder.
