Eastown Animal Hospital was established in the 1930's. Dr. James Denhart has been the practice owner since 1973. Our mission is to treat your pets as if they were our own with love, care, and quality medicine. We believe that it is through communicating with you, the pet owner, that we can both work together to give your pet a happy and healthy home environment. Pets are an important part of all our lives, and we want nothing more than to ensure that your friends remain with you for a long, long time.

Dr. James D. Denhart

Veterinarian, DVM

Dr. James Denhart purchased Eastown Animal Hospital in September of 1973. He was the graduating scholar at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He is a member of American Animal Hospital Assoiation (AAHA), Greater Des Moines Veterinary Medical Association (GDVMA), Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Dr. Denhart is a founding member and past member of the Board of Directors of Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Central Iowa. He is married, has 3 adult children, 1 dog and 1 cat.
Area of Special Interest: Senior Pet Care. He is currently working part time and spending a great deal of time on Veterninary Information Network keeping current on new developments in medicine and surgery.

Dr. Lisa A. Nelson

Veterinarian, DVM

Dr. Lisa Nelson earned her DVM Degree from Iowa State University in 1989. She has been in small animal practice since graduation and has been at Eastown since 2002. Dr. Lisa is a member of the AVMA.
Her most recent family member is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Luke who is becoming an agility dog. She also lives with several cats. On her time off you will find her out kayaking or hiking the trails with Luke.
Areas of Special Interest: Feline medicine, Cytology, Agility training for dogs.

Scott Denhart

Office Manager

Scott has worked in various capacities at Eastown since 1981. He graduated with honors from Des Moines East High School in 1986 and earned a Bachelor of Science in History from Iowa State University in 1991. Scott's family includes his wife, Janean, and three Afghan Hounds named Erika, Henry and June As you can imagine, the main family hobby involves grooming those beautiful puppies. He also enjoys following the Chicago Cubs.
Areas of Special Interest: Preventive Medicine, Radiology, Cytology, Strengthening the Human-Animal Bond.

Jennifer Pierson

Veterinary Assistant

Jen began work at Eastown in the Spring of 2001. Born and raised in Des Moines, she graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1997. After graduation, Jen earned a Veterinary Assistant Diploma from the Professional Career Development Institute.
She is engaged to be married, has a son named Aaron, and a step son-to-be, Noah. Jen also lives with 3 dogs named Zorra, Cyrus and Moscow Mac.
In her spare time Jen enoys movies and spending time with her family.
Areas of Special Interest: Laboratory Analysis and Dentistry.

Bubs Gillespie

Receptionist

Bubs has worked at Eastown since 1993. She graduated early from Des Moines Lincoln High School in 1971 and attended Methodist School of Nursing. Bubs is married and has three grown children, Joe, Josh and Jadi. She has many interests including figure-8 racing and collecting Longaberger baskets and cow motifs. Bubs loves spending time with her family and large brood of 4 legged children as well.
Areas of Special Interest: Preventive Medicine, Radiology, Rescuing orphaned animals.

Dr. Mark Severs

Veterinarian, DVM

Dr. Severs grew up in Boone, IA. He graduated from Buena Vista University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He earned his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 2002. Dr. Mark is a member of the GDVMA, IVMA, and AVMA.
He lives in Des Moines with his wife, Kristen, daughters Isabelle and Felicity and his beagle Ally. He enjoys walks with his family and cheering for the Cyclone athletic teams.

Ashley Weltzheimer

Veterinary Assistant

Ashley started working at Eastown in the summer of 2005. She has been a veterinary assistant for 5 years. Ashley graduated from Des Moines East High School. She took Veterinary Assistant courses at Des Moines Area Community College. Ashley is engaged to be married the summer of 2007. Along with a house full of cats, she has 2 dogs named Mufasa and Kain. Ashley enloys spending time with family and friends. Special Interests: Dentistry and Radiology.

Spring Breckenridge

Veterinary Assistant

Spring started at Eastown in June 2006. She has been a veterinary assistant for 4 years. Spring graduated from Interstate 35 High School in Truro, Iowa. She enjoys spending time at home with her husband Chance. She has a Rat Terrier named Toby Jordan and 2 gorgeous Himalayans, Gemini and Taurus. Special Interests: Radiology.
