Description

Southwest Pet Hospital was founded in 1976 by Dr. Sunny Hinshaw with a dual purpose: to provide the best possible care to pets and piece of mind to their owners. We have always strived to build and maintain a reputation for excellence and satisfaction among our customers, and are extremely proud of the results. For 26 years now, we have been helping to keep the pets of Springdale healthy and happy.

Southwest Pet Hospital emphasizes preventative health care: vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention, internal parasite (worm) control, external parasite control (fleas and ticks), spaying, neutering, and general dentistry. We also recommend annual health blood screening for all animals over the age of 7 years. These geriatric exams help us detect and prevent complications of advancing age. We offer in-house blood chemistry machines though we utilize outside laboratories. And while we offer general surgery and medicine, we do not hesitate to refer to specialists, both in private practice and in the veterinary schools.

Dr. Hinshaw received the Arkansas Hero Award in November 1988. The award recognizes her dedication and compassion for animals and her outstanding efforts in working with local animal shelters. The Arkansas Times Magazine sponsored the award.

You and your pets are always welcome here at the Southwest Pet Hospital; we hope to see you soon.

Dr. Sunny Hinshaw

Veterinarian and Owner

Dr. Sunny Hinshaw is a Springdale High graduate from 1968 and took her pre-veterinary schooling at Purdue University (2 years) and Oklahoma State University (one year). She was accepted by and received her degree from Oklahoma State University on May 10th, 1975. After graduation, she returned to Oak Park Animal Hospital in Pine Bluff, AR, where she had done her preceptorship to work for one year while she arranged to return to her hometown of Springdale in June of 1976 to “hang out her shingle”. Dr. Sunny, as her clients call her, was the first female veterinarian in Northwest Arkansas and outside of teachers and one female postal employee, she was the first woman professional in Springdale. After Dr. Sunny turned that new ground, NW Ark became a haven for women in all professions. Female veterinarians, doctors, and lawyers are now well accepted in our corner of Arkansas.

Pet population control has always been an issue of concern for Dr. Sunny and early in her career she founded an organization to build and run Springdale’s Animal Shelter. The organization was called “Adopt A Pet” and the Arkansas Times honored her in 1988 as an Arkansas Hero for her work in this nontraditional and often thankless field. The Adopt A Pet Shelter was the first professionally run animal shelter in Northwest Arkansas and soon thereafter, the other communities began to plan for or improve their animal shelters. Dr. Sunny retired from Adopt A Pet after 10 years and while the organization no longer exists, the Springdale Animal Shelter is still often called Adopt A Pet and her standards of disease control, vaccination, adequate nutrition and housing, and the neutering of all non-breeding-stock pets are still followed.

Dr. Sunny will soon be celebrating her 25th anniversary of business in Springdale at the same location. And while this makes Dr. Sunny “one of the old vets” she is pleased with the accomplishments and the direction veterinary medicine has taken since she opened Southwest Pet Hospital.

Sue Barens

Office Manager

Sue has recently retired and left Southwest Pet Hospital. We wish Sue the best and will call her often asking her how she did this or that as we try to learn to how on earth did all that she did without losing her sanity! All the best to you Sue!

Theresa Blevins

Handler and Receptionist

Theresa has returned to us to work in both the front office and in the back! Theresa worked here for 9 years before she left to go live on her farm and raise horses. Looks like raising horses is a bit expensive and Theresa missed us to boot! So when you come in you'll see a familiar face that's a bit older and wiser and glad to be back!

Kelli Lund

Office Manager

Kelli joined our staff as a "girl friday", became an animal handler, trained as a receptionistand then became the head receptionist and is now our Office Manager. She is married and has two dogs.

Linda Muller

Veterinary Assistant

Linda is the Kennel Manager of Southwest Pet Hospital and is currently training as a Veterinary Assistant. She has between 3 and 8 cats and dogs depending on the neediness of the most current stray before she finds homes for the lucky critters.
